Two people in Iowa passed away in an accident between a motorcycle and a passenger car. Reportedly, a motorcycle was driving down Martin Luther King Dr., which is in Waterloo. It was going south. The intersection between Martin Luther King Dr. and Mobile Street was ahead of the bike.
At that intersection was a passenger car, which was waiting to turn left. That would have taken it off of the northbound lane of Martin Luther King Dr. and onto Mobile Street.
However, the driver did not wait until the motorcycle was through the intersection, instead trying to make the turn in front of the much smaller vehicle. The motorcycle plowed into the passenger side of the car. The police have not yet closed their investigation into the cause of the crash, however.
The man on the motorcycle was killed in the crash. He was just 42 years old at the time. While the driver who attempted the left-hand turn survived the accident, a passenger in that car was killed in the impact. That passenger was 20 years old.
This story illustrates one of the most common ways that motorcycle accidents take place. Drivers waiting to turn left often simply fail to see the bikes that are coming toward them, and they turn in their path. This can lead to devastating accidents, and the person who caused the crash is often the one with less serious injuries.
